The Western Cape Government (WCG) is responsible for making the laws for and providing services to the people of the province. The WCG works closely with the South African National Government as well as various municipalities within the Western Cape, ensuring that all people are provided with the facilities, services, and information they need.

The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public works is a department within the Western Cape Government that is responsible for the development of transport systems within the province. They are responsible for maintaining and constructing buildings and other structures for departments of the provincial government.

  • Vredendal
  • Worcester

Number of positions available:
Stipend: R 5000

The Western Cape Government – Department of Transport and Public Works, is inviting students from the Western Cape province to apply for the Traffic Student Intake: Provincial Inspector, at various traffic centres across the province.
About the programme: 12 months
This programme aims to award candidates with a Further Education and Training Certificate in Road Traffic and Law Enforcement. This programme will officially commence on Monday 17th January 2022 at the Gene Louw College in Brackenfell and will run for a duration of 12 months.

During this 12 month programme, candidates will be expected to work various shifts, holidays, and Sundays as well as additional hours, as well as undergo extensive physical training.
Selection and post-learnership opportunities:
The various tests the shortlisted candidates will need to pass in order to be qualified for this programme are an interview, driving test, knowledge test, fitness test, as well as a medical and drug test; the candidates will also receive a monthly stipend of R5000 during their training period.

The learnership offers potential permanent employment post-programme. Should a vacancy for Provincial Inspector open up after the candidates have obtained their FET certificate, they may have the opportunity for permanent employment at the various Provincial Traffic Centres.
Key Performance Areas of the Programme:

  • Ensuring all road traffic, transport, and public passenger legislation is enforced
  • Visibly controlling and policing all traffic
  • Ensuring that crime prevention activities are performed and promoted
  • Ensuring all administrative duties are completed

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:

Before applying, please ensure that you meet ALL of the following minimum entry criteria – failure to satisfy all the requirements will result in your application being disqualified:

  • Must have completed a Senior Certificate/ Equivalent
  • Must have a valid Code B manual Driver’s licence
  • Must have one or more years of driving experience (advantageous)
  • Must be a resident in the area of any of the above-mentioned traffic centres
  • Must be fluent in the home language of the area where you will be appointed
  • Must be 35 years old or younger
  • Must be physically fit
  • Must NOT have any visible tattoos or piercings (except females with one in each ear)
  • Must NOT have a criminal record
  • Must qualify for appointment as an Authorized Officer
  • Must qualify for appointment as a Peace Officer
  • Must have excellent communication skills (written and oral) in at least two of the Western Cape’s official language
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and public relations skills
  • Must be able to work in a high pressured environment
  • Must be confident and assertive
  • Must be able to work well both in a team and independently
